Weeks after moving to New Jersey I accidentally almost slipped into a pediatric‑cancer foundation chair seat. They invited me onto the board, asked me to help coordinate a gala, talked to me like I was already part of the inner circle. On the surface, it looked like purpose. Underneath, it was something else.
The tell came early.
We were at a nice restaurant, the kind of place where the check lands with a little ceremony. When it did, the founder waved it off with a smile.
“Don’t worry. The foundation’s got it.”
That was the moment the whole structure snapped into focus. If she had said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this,” the signal would’ve been different. But she didn’t. She reached for the nonprofit’s wallet like it was her own. That wasn’t generosity. That was habit.
I asked a few questions — the right ones — and the truth surfaced fast.
When her child got sick, it consumed everything. The hospital stays, the bills, the lost income, the fundraising from family and friends just to keep the lights on. When the child died, the grief didn’t end and neither did the financial pressure. She had no job, no stability, and a long trail of spending that needed a story. So the foundation became the story. It became the explanation, the identity, the continuation.
But she wasn’t built for that role.
Running a foundation requires discipline, transparency, boundaries, and a moral compass that doesn’t wobble under strain. She had enthusiasm, pain, and a need — but not the architecture. She wasn’t malicious. She was simply miscast. A person raised cushioned, suddenly thrust into a position that demanded integrity under pressure. That’s not a skill you improvise.
The more I looked, the clearer it became: the foundation wasn’t a mission. It was a life raft.
And if I stepped onto that board, I’d be responsible for a structure that was already drifting. I’d be the one expected to fix it, justify it, carry it. This wasn’t my mission, not my dream.
So I stepped back. Quietly. Cleanly.
Not every year gives you a dramatic exit. Sometimes it’s just a sentence over dinner that tells you everything you need to know. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is recognize when something isn’t your path — and refuse to let someone else’s drift become your responsibility.
This was one of those years. A sidestep. A near‑miss. A reminder that clarity is its own kind of compass.
And I followed it out the door.
